This is the number one question we get as an outfitter/guide. The answer can vary depending on the season, weather, and your comfort level, but the goal is always the same: stay comfortable, stay protected from the sun, and be prepared for changing desert conditions.
The Moab Daily section of the Colorado River is known for beautiful scenery, warm summer temperatures, splashy rapids, and long stretches of sunshine. Even on cooler days, the desert sun can feel intense, especially with sunlight reflecting off the water and canyon walls. We strongly recommend guests plan ahead and check the local Moab weather forecast before arriving for their trip. Spring mornings can be cool, summer afternoons can become extremely hot, and weather conditions in the canyon can change quickly depending on clouds, wind, and seasonal storms.
One of the best things guests can do is wear lightweight layers. During spring and fall rafting trips, mornings may start cool while afternoons warm up significantly. Long sleeve performance shirts, lightweight jackets, or sun hoodies work extremely well because they help regulate temperature while also protecting skin from direct sunlight. In the summer, breathable sun shirts often keep guests cooler than tank tops because they reduce direct sun exposure throughout the day.
Footwear is another important consideration. Guests should expect the possibility of getting their feet wet during rafting trips, especially while loading boats, pushing off from shore, or splashing through rapids. Water-friendly shoes such as Tevas, Chacos, Keens (personal favorite), sandals with heel straps, or old tennis shoes work great. Flip flops are generally not recommended because they can easily fall off in the water or around the raft.
Sun protection is extremely important while rafting in Moab. The combination of high elevation, desert climate, and reflective water can create intense UV exposure, even on cloudy days. We recommend sunscreen, sunglasses with a retention strap, hats with brims, and lightweight clothing that covers the shoulders and arms whenever possible. Many guests are surprised at how much sun exposure they receive while floating through the canyon for several hours.
Weather awareness is also important during monsoon season and shoulder seasons. Afternoon thunderstorms occasionally move through the canyon during summer months, and spring or fall weather can shift quickly depending on wind and cloud cover. Bringing an extra layer or lightweight rain jacket is never a bad idea, especially during cooler months. At Way to Moab, we always monitor river and weather conditions closely to help guests stay comfortable and safe throughout the trip. We can help with “dressing for the water.”
For most summer rafting trips, guests are happiest wearing:
Lightweight shorts or quick-dry clothing
Swimsuits under clothing
Sun shirts or lightweight long sleeves
Water-friendly shoes
Hats and sunglasses
Plenty of sunscreen
For spring and fall trips, adding layers such as fleece pullovers, lightweight jackets, leggings, wool socks, or splash-resistant outerwear can make the experience much more enjoyable.
The good news is that rafting on the Colorado River near Moab does not require expensive technical gear for most trips. Comfort, sun protection, and flexibility are far more important than specialized equipment. Whether you are joining Way to Moab for your first rafting trip or returning for another float down the Colorado River, being prepared for the weather and desert sun helps ensure an unforgettable day on the water.
